Book Carmel Mission Inn. It's right off the HWY 1 at the southmost part of Carmel. Big Sur is about 40-ish minutes if you go early, and miss lolly gag traffic. Find an itinerary you like for 2 days (Happy to help, but so will the sub), and spend 2 days commuting from south carmel to big sur.
