Castle Howard is a private residence (1998). The stables (listed grade I) lie c 300m south-west of the Castle. They were designed by John Carr in 1781-4 for the fifth Earl of Carlisle. On the north side of the Castle there are extensive views over parkland and the Great Lake, which was constructed 1795-9.
