My first consistent experience with communal showers was, like for many, at secondary school (high school for you Americans). I should explain our locker room didn't have any lockers. Instead it had rows of benches with hooks. There were several large cages at the back of the room we could put our bags/ things in the gym teacher could lock.

The Y I go to has a “mens health center” upstairs and in there is a locker room, plus in the back there is communal showers, a sauna, a steam room, and a whirlpool.
